Modine Products & the Environment

In addition to actively promoting environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes, Modine is constantly trying to research new products that benefit the environment. Some present examples include:

CO2:
In an effort to help reduce hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) - the gases known to cause global warming - Modine has been developing CO2 air conditioning systems since 1995. The elimination of HFCs will allow A/C systems to run on "natural" refrigerants instead of R134a, the coolant used in most refrigeration systems today.

Fuel Cells:
The reduction of harmful emissions and our reliance on fossil fuels are what's driving the auto industry toward fuel cell powered vehicles. Manufacturers are aggressively working to place fuel cell systems into the market and Modine will be along for the ride with them, meeting their heat transfer requirements.

We are also working with ChevronTexaco Technology Ventures regarding a new approach to increase the efficiency, and reduce the cost and complexity, of hydrogen generation for distributed energy stations.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR):
To reduce vehicular emissions, Modine has developed EGR coolers for light and heavy duty vehicles. EGR coolers help the environment by taking the exhaust gas from an engine, cooling it, removing many of its harmful chemicals, and then recirculating the gas back through the engine. By doing so, the emission of smog-producing pollutants and greenhouse gases are reduced.
