Energy Conservation

Modine introduced its Energy Conservation Initiative in October 2004, challenging its worldwide facilities to reduce energy consumption – including electricity and fuel - by 12% over the fiscal 2004 baseline. Modine surpassed that goal in fiscal 2006 by achieving an 18% decrease in energy consumption (normalized for sales) over the fiscal 2004 baseline. This past year, more than two thirds of all Modine facilities reduced their use of fuel and electricity.

These advances are critical in the face of sharply rising energy costs and the global dependence on fossil fuels. Modine's energy conservation improvements over the past two years saved 81,000 tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the emissions found within 8.4 million gallons of gasoline.

To continue this momentum, each Modine location has established energy reduction goals.

Modine plants that have achieved the Energy Conservation Initiative include:

Harrodsburg, Kentucky – Achieved a 13% energy reduction in the 2004-05 fiscal year (normalized for sales). The most successful project was the removal of rotary flux brazing, which led to the elimination of natural gas torches, hot water internal coil flush, and external wash and drying stages. This project alone saves $37,000 annually. Other projects bring Harrodsburg's total savings to $77,000 a year.

Jefferson City, Missouri – Achieved a 16% energy reduction in the 2004-05 fiscal year (normalized for sales). The Jefferson City facility is saving greater than $156,000 annually by their conversion to automated heating/ventilation controls, improved boiler systems efficiencies, as well as other energy reduction measures.

McHenry, Illinois – Achieved a 17% energy reduction in the 2004-05 fiscal year (normalized for sales). The McHenry plant is saving greater than $97,000 annually by improved compressed air management and improved process equipment management.

Nuevo Laredo, Mexico – Achieved a 14% energy reduction in the 2004-05 fiscal year (normalized for sales). Through the Energy Conservation program, Nuevo Laredo has seen annual savings in excess of $100,000. Two of the biggest money-savers are the replacement of outdated equipment. A 38-year-old boiler was replaced with a more efficient unit, saving $42,000 annually in fuel expenses. Exhaust ducts were also replaced with ionizing air filters. The filtered air is now recirculated too, saving $33,000 annually in electricity.

Pemberville, Ohio – Achieved a 16% energy reduction in the 2004-05 fiscal year (normalized for sales). By turning off process exhausts during non-production hours and monitoring air balance, the facility is saving over $25,000 annually on this one project alone. Other energy conservation projects are saving an additional $16,000 annually.

Uden, The Netherlands – Achieved a 17% energy reduction in the 2005-06 fiscal year (normalized for sales). By improving the utilization of their furnaces and reducing weekday standby temperatures, the plant will see annual electricity savings in excess of $11,000. The plant also increased the number of units brazed per-batch, and reduced weekend standby temperatures saving a combined $13,000 annually.
